Mercedes-Maybach
9/10 C/D RATING

- Highs Effortless power, fabulous interior luxury, smothers bumps so well you won’t spill your champagne.
- Lows Possibly too understated for some one-percenters, prices range into Rolls and Bentley territory.
- Verdict The ultra-posh, leather-lined Mercedes-Maybach S-class may be less ostentatious than its upper-crust rivals, but it’s still deservedly a plutocrat’s ride.
Overview
As far as ocean liner-size, ultra-luxury sedans go, the Mercedes-Maybach S-class is less showy than cars from Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Keen-eyed observers will note the wheelbase stretch compared to a regular Benz-branded S-class, the reshaped C-pillars wearing Maybach logos, and the metal trim running down the hood. But once a rear door pops open (either by hand or via an available power assist) the limo-like cabin's additional space comes into focus and the Maybach's reason for being solidifies: it’s a sybarite’s haven in there, with materials, finishes, and features to match those in the most expensive luxury sedans. This fanciest of S-classes is the closest thing to a sensory deprivation tank on four wheels; it practically floats down the road. If you happen to grab the keys from your chauffeur, you'll experience effortless acceleration with every prod of the right pedal as well as surprisingly poised handling. Rear-wheel steering helps it to feel a size smaller, especially when maneuvering in tight spaces. A V-8 is standard, but we prefer the oligarch-spec V-12 for its turbine-like power delivery. If an off-the-shelf Maybach S-class isn’t special enough, Mercedes offers additional customization possibilities through its Manufaktur program. After something more attention-getting? Consider a Rolls-Royce Phantom—or maybe a custom-painted private jet.

What's New for 2025?
Maybach is offering the S680 Edition Nordic Glow, which celebrates the Northern Lights with special two-tone paint and specific interior finishes. Just 50 will be offered and, in addition to the unique appearance elements, the Nordic Glow comes with just about every available add-on, including the Night Series Design and Executive Rear Seat Plus packages. These levels of exclusivity and opulence do not come cheap; the Nordic Glow costs a cool $100k more than a plain-Jane Maybach S680—which puts it within striking distance of a Rolls-Royce Ghost’s starting price.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2025 Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is expected to start around $200,000 and go up to $340,150 depending on the trim and options.
If you're going to go with a Maybach version of the S-class, you might as well go big and get the S680 and its powerful V-12 engine. Standard features are of course plentiful and include luxury items such as soft-close doors, an air suspension, a 30-speaker Burmester stereo system, a rear-seat entertainment system with two 11.6-inch touchscreens, and much, much more.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Under the hood of the S580 sedan is a 496-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, which is augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system. Going with the S680 swaps in a 621-hp 6.0-liter V-12. All models come with Mercedes's 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. But effortless power is not the most impressive thing about the Maybach S-class. During our time with the car, we were impressed with the supremely supple ride quality and the nearly silent cabin—we recorded an extremely low 64 decibels inside the car while cruising at 70 mph. An air suspension and an active sound cancellation system are both standard, helping the car deliver its silky, ultra-quiet ride; the Maybach S-class also offers rear-wheel steering, which should help with navigating this big sedan through tight city streets.
0–60-MPH Times
During our testing, the S580 hustled to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. The V-12 in the S680 is even more rapid, getting the massive Maybach to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA estimates that the S580 is good for 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway; the S680's fuel-efficiency estimates are 12 mpg city and 21 mpg highway. When we get the chance, we'll take a Maybach S-class on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route and report those test results here. For more information about the S-class's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The Maybach S-class has a seven-inch-longer wheelbase than the already large Benz-branded S-class sedan, which provides even more stretch-out space for rear-seat passengers inside its leather-lined cabin. So many luxury features are standard in the Maybach we couldn't possibly list them all here, but all models come with exquisite leather on virtually every interior surface; a 64-color interior ambient lighting system; heated-and-ventilated front seats with massage and four-position memory settings; heated rear seats with power adjustments and massage; an air ionizing system with a signature fragrance; and a panoramic sunroof. For buyers who intend to be chauffeured, Maybach can add the optional Executive Rear Seat Plus package, which includes rear-seat folding tables, an extended center console, additional rear-seat wood trim, and temperature-controlled cupholders. Also optional are electrically operated rear doors, a cabin mini-fridge, and Maybach-branded champagne flutes.

Infotainment and Connectivity
Like the standard Benz S-class, the Maybach version comes with Mercedes's latest MBUX infotainment interface displayed on a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is also standard, and all models are also equipped with an augmented-reality navigation system that displays easy-to-follow video directions on both the infotainment display and the car's head-up display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with wireless connectivity, 6 USB-C ports, a 30-speaker Burmester stereo system, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and a rear-seat entertainment system are all standard features.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The Maybach S-class offers a portfolio of standard driver-assistance features; traditionally the S-class is the model in which Mercedes offers its groundbreaking tech features first. For more information about the S-class's crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
- Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
- Standard adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature mode
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Mercedes-Maybach provides solid warranty coverage. It surpasses the protection offered by Bentley.
- Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
- No complimentary scheduled maintenance
