HONOLULU — The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team heads to California for its first road trip of the Big West season this weekend. The Rainbow Wahine (7-5, 1-1 Big West) will open the trip against UC San Diego (7-6, 1-1) on Friday at LionTree Arena in La Jolla, Calif. UH and Long Beach State (8-4, 2-0) renew their rivalry in a nationally televised matchup on Saturday at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach.

'BOWS NOTES

  • The Rainbow Wahine opened Big West play with a split of last week's homestand. The 'Bows dropped a five-set duel with UC Irvine and bounced back with a sweep of Cal State Fullerton.
  • Middle blocker Miliana Sylvester earned her second Big West Freshman of the Week award on Monday after posting 30 kills while hitting .489 during last week's homestand.
  • Sylvester leads the team and ranks fourthin the Big West with a .349 hitting percentage for the season.
  • Caylen Alexander has claimed two Big West Offensive Player of the Week awards this season. She entered the week fourth in the nation in total kills (248) and kills per set (4.96), fifth in total points (275.0) and sixth in points per set (5.50). She leads the Big West in each of those categories. She started the first 11 matches of the season before sitting out against Cal State Fullerton.
  • UH setter Kate Lang ranks third in the Big West with 9.56 assists per set and continues to rise on UH's career chart. She moved up to sixth in program history with 3,746 assists.
  • The Rainbow Wahine entered the conference season as the defending champions after sweeping through the inaugural Big West Championship last year in Long Beach, Calif. UH won the regular-season title the previous three seasons.
  • Prior to Saturday's sweep over Cal State Fullerton, UH had played at least four sets in the previous 11 matches. The 'Bows have played 54 out of a possible 60 sets with seven matches going to a fifth set. UH is 4-3 in five-set matches.


GROWING UP QUICK

  • Each member of UH's four-player freshmen class made an impact on UH's win over Cal State Fullerton.
  • Miliana Sylvester has started all 12 matches this season and wasjoined in the starting lineup by fellow middle blocker Maddie Way and Adrianna Arquette at opposite against the Titans. Defensive specialist Victoria Leyva, who started the previous eight matches, rotated into the back row.
  • Along with Sylvester's 14-for-17 night, Way posted eight kills on 17 attempts with one error to hit .412 in her first career start and UH's middles hit a combined .588.
  • Arquette, recruited as a setter, contributed a season-high five kills, had three assists and seven digs and served up the first two aces of her collegiate career.
  • Leyva posted eight digs and recorded the first kill of her career.


THE MATCHUPS
UC SAN DIEGO

  • UH and UCSD first met on Oct. 8, 1982, a 15-2, 15-7, 15-13 UH win. The 'Bows have won all six meetings since the Tritons joined the Big West in 2021.
  • UCSD split the opening weekend of Big West play with a five-set win at UC Riverside and a loss at UC Davis.
  • UCSD head coach Melanie Greene is in her first season leading the Tritons. She was previously the associate head coach at San Diego State.
  • Ava McInnes was a preseason All-Big West selection and leads the Tritons with 153 kills (3.58 per set).
  • UCSD ranks second in the Big West with 1.69 aces per set. McInnes leads the team with 18 followed by Paulina Baille with 16.
  • UCSD has one player from Hawai'i on its roster, junior defensive specialist Kailee Wakatake (Kalani High School).

LONG BEACH STATE

  • UH holds a 43-19-1 lead in the series with Long Beach State, which dates back to 1977.
  • The Beach swept UH in last year's meeting in Long Beach. The 'Bows won the rematch on senior night in Mānoa then swept the Beach in the title match of the inaugural Big West Championship at the Walter Pyramid.
  • UH and Long Beach State played to the lone tie in program history (12-15, 15-6) on Nov. 4, 1978.
  • Long Beach State's win at the Walter Pyramid last season snapped UH's 11-match winning streak in the series, stretching from 2016 to 2022.
  • Natalie Reagan was named interim head coach in February, taking over the program after serving as the top assistant during Tyler Hildebrand's tenure as head coach.
  • The Beach entered the week on a four-match winning streak after opening the Big West season with a four-set win at UC Davis and a sweep at UC Riverside last week.
  • Senior outside hitter Natalie Glenn leads the Beach and ranks sixth in the Big West with 3.35 kills per set and fifth in hitting percentage at .329.
